Cease entered the matchup pitching at an extremely high level, carrying a 2.28 ERA with 184 strikeouts into the game.
More importantly, he had already shown that his arsenal matched up exceptionally well against Boston.
In a recent meeting with the Red Sox, Cease delivered an incredible performance:

When we're handicapping baseball, we don't automatically assume that a pitcher will repeat a dominant previous performance. Baseball doesn't work that way.
But previous meetings can tell us something important about how a pitcher's arsenal matches up with a particular lineup.
Cease had already demonstrated that Boston's hitters could have significant problems solving his stuff.
That gave us an excellent starting point.
Toronto Had More Than Just the Pitching Advantage
We weren't betting Toronto solely because of Cease.
The Blue Jays had also been having considerable success against Boston this season.
Toronto entered Tuesday having won seven of its first ten meetings against the Red Sox, including a 2-1 victory Monday night.
Boston was also entering Tuesday on a three-game losing streak.
Put everything together and we had several factors pointing in Toronto's direction:
Elite starting pitching
Strong recent matchup history
Boston entering in poor form
Toronto playing at home
A price that remained within our acceptable betting range
That's the type of situation we're looking for.
Why We Played the Moneyline
There are plenty of ways we could have attacked the matchup.
Toronto run line.
First five innings.
Cease strikeouts.
Game total.
