Free Pick Recap: Yankees Fall 1–0 to Mariners in a Pitching Duel
Our MoonPicks98 Free Play of the Day for Thursday, August 13, was the New York Yankees moneyline at -135 against the Seattle Mariners.
The matchup unfolded largely as the pitching battle we anticipated. Unfortunately, New York’s offense could not produce the run support we needed, and Seattle escaped with a narrow 1–0 victory.
Why We Liked the Yankees
Several factors made New York an attractive moneyline play at the posted price.
The Starting-Pitching Advantage
Max Fried entered the matchup with a 2.88 ERA, compared with Logan Gilbert’s 3.42 ERA. Gilbert is a quality starter, but we believed Fried’s ability to limit hard contact and navigate a lineup multiple times gave New York a slight advantage on the mound.
That part of the analysis was largely accurate. The game became a low-scoring battle, and the Yankees allowed only one run. Holding an opponent to one run will normally give a team an excellent opportunity to win.
Seattle’s Recent Struggles
The Mariners entered the game having lost six consecutive contests and 15 of their previous 20. Their offense had been inconsistent, and their recent form made it difficult to trust them on the road.
New York, meanwhile, had just scored 10 runs against Seattle in the previous meeting. We were not expecting another offensive explosion, but we believed the Yankees could generate enough production to support Fried and win at home.
A Reasonable Moneyline Price
At -135, the Yankees needed to win approximately 57.4% of the time for the wager to break even. Our evaluation placed New York’s probability slightly above that number, making the Yankees moneyline our preferred side.
The price remained inside our usual limit of avoiding heavily juiced favorites, so we believed the potential reward justified the risk.
What Happened?
The anticipated pitching duel arrived, but the Yankees’ offense never did.
Seattle scored the game’s only run and protected its lead for a 1–0 victory. New York received the type of pitching performance necessary to win, but a scoreless offensive night made that effort irrelevant to the final result.
Final Result
Pick: New York Yankees moneyline
Odds: -135
Final score: Seattle Mariners 1, New York Yankees 0
Result: Loss
This was a frustrating result because the game followed our expected low-scoring script. The difference was New York failing to produce even one run.
The Takeaway
A losing pick does not automatically mean the reasoning was careless, just as a winning pick does not automatically mean the analysis was correct.
We correctly identified a matchup in which Seattle’s offense was likely to struggle, but we underestimated how completely Logan Gilbert and the Mariners would shut down New York. When a team allows only one run, the bet will usually have a legitimate chance to cash. On this occasion, it was not enough.
We will record the loss, review the offensive matchup more closely and continue following the same disciplined process. Transparency matters at MoonPicks98, which means discussing the losing plays as openly as the winners.
