⚾ MLB Top 5 Recap: A 2-3 Day, What We Got Right & What We Learned
Not every betting card is going to finish in the green, and Wednesday's MoonPicks98 Premium Top 5 is a good example of why we track the process just as closely as the final results.
We finished the card 2-3, cashing our biggest play on the Tampa Bay Rays -1.5 along with the Chicago White Sox Team Total Over 4.5. Drew Rasmussen's strikeout prop came up short, while Philadelphia and Baltimore both failed to deliver.
Let's break down why we liked each play, what happened, and what we can take from the results.
✅ #1 Tampa Bay Rays -1.5 (-122) — 2 Units
Final: Rays 8, Athletics 4 — WIN
This was our highest-confidence play of the day, which is why we put 2 units behind it.
The biggest reason was the starting-pitching advantage. Drew Rasmussen entered the matchup with a 2.75 ERA and 0.91 WHIP, while Oakland starter Jack Perkins entered with a 7.04 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.
We also believed Tampa Bay was simply the better baseball team.
The Rays moneyline was priced too heavily for us, so rather than laying around -200 simply for Tampa Bay to win, we moved to the -1.5 run line at -122.
That proved to be the right move.
Tampa Bay scored eight runs and walked away with an 8-4 victory, covering the run line by plenty.
💰 RESULT: WIN +2 Units
This is exactly what we're looking for when assigning additional units to a play: a combination of matchup advantage and a price that we believe offers value.
❌ #2 Drew Rasmussen Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+133) — 1.5 Units
Result: LOSS
This was closely connected to what we liked about Tampa Bay.
Rasmussen had been excellent this season, and at +133, we felt Over 5.5 strikeouts offered enough upside to warrant a 1.5-unit position.
The Rays winning the game didn't automatically mean Rasmussen's strikeout prop would cash, though.
That's an important distinction.
A pitcher can control a lineup, generate weak contact and put his team in position to win without piling up strikeouts.
The strikeouts simply didn't get there.
💰 RESULT: LOSS -1.5 Units
We still like the reasoning behind targeting Rasmussen, but player props have additional variables—pitch count, efficiency, contact rate and how long the starter remains in the game—that aren't necessarily reflected in the final team score.
✅ #3 Chicago White Sox Team Total Over 4.5 (-103) — 1 Unit
Result: WIN
This was one of our favorite value plays on the card.
Instead of betting Chicago to win the game, we isolated the matchup we actually wanted: the White Sox offense against Cincinnati pitching.
Rhett Lowder entered with a 5.26 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, and we believed Chicago would have opportunities to put runs on the board.
We needed five runs.
The White Sox offense delivered.
💰 RESULT: WIN +1 Unit
This is a great example of why team totals can sometimes be preferable to moneylines. We weren't asking Chicago's pitching staff to win us the wager. We simply needed the offense to take advantage of the matchup.
They did.
❌ #4 Philadelphia Phillies -1.5 (+111) — 1 Unit
Result: LOSS
This one deserves a little more discussion.
The primary reason we backed Philadelphia was Zack Wheeler.
Wheeler entered with a 2.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP and was one of the strongest starting pitchers on Wednesday's entire MLB slate.
Philadelphia's regular moneyline was expensive, so we moved to Phillies -1.5 at +111.
From a value standpoint, we liked getting plus money behind an elite starting pitcher.
But there's another side to every matchup.
The Cardinals are getting HOT.
St. Louis appears to have found some momentum, and Wednesday was another reminder that current team form deserves attention alongside the underlying pitching numbers.
Philadelphia ran into a Cardinals team playing with confidence, and the matchup didn't develop the way we projected.
💰 RESULT: LOSS -1 Unit
We're going to keep a closer eye on St. Louis moving forward.
Sometimes the lesson from a losing wager isn't necessarily "don't bet that team again."
It can be:
"Maybe we shouldn't be betting against the opponent right now."
The Cardinals may be entering one of those stretches.
❌ #5 Baltimore Orioles Moneyline (+100) — 0.75 Unit
Result: LOSS
This is the one that's becoming frustrating.
We liked Baltimore at essentially even money because of the pitching matchup and offensive upside.
But there's now a bigger question we have to address:
The Orioles have burned us multiple times recently.
This isn't about getting emotional or putting a team on a permanent "do not bet" list. That's one of the easiest ways to allow recent results to distort future handicapping.
But when the same team repeatedly underperforms our projections, it's worth examining whether our model or handicapping process is overvaluing something about that team.
Maybe we're placing too much weight on Baltimore's offensive upside.
Maybe their inconsistency isn't being penalized enough.
Maybe the market is pricing their potential more accurately than our projections have been.
Whatever the explanation, we're going to be much more selective with Baltimore going forward.
They'll need to present a genuinely strong edge before we're willing to go back to them.
💰 RESULT: LOSS -0.75 Unit
📊 FINAL RESULTS
Tampa Bay Rays -1.5 (-122), 2U: ✅ WIN
Rasmussen O5.5 Ks (+133), 1.5U: ❌ LOSS
White Sox TT O4.5 (-103), 1U: ✅ WIN
Phillies -1.5 (+111), 1U: ❌ LOSS
Orioles ML (+100), 0.75U: ❌ LOSS
Record: 2-3
Because our largest play won, the day wasn't nearly as damaging from a unit perspective as a simple 2-3 record might suggest. That's also why we publish unit sizes instead of pretending every wager carries identical confidence.
🧠 What We're Taking Away From the Card
There are three things that stand out.
First, our strongest handicap delivered. Tampa Bay was our No. 1 play and our only 2-unit wager, and the Rays delivered an 8-4 victory.
Second, St. Louis deserves more respect right now. The Cardinals appear to be finding a groove, and we're going to account for that recent momentum before fading them again.
Third, Baltimore is officially on our radar for the wrong reasons. The Orioles have hurt us multiple times recently. We aren't blacklisting them, but the threshold for betting Baltimore is going higher until we identify why they're repeatedly falling short of our expectations.
That's handicapping.
You don't throw away the process because of a losing day, but you also don't blindly make the same assumptions tomorrow.
Review. Adjust. Find the next edge.
