MoonPicks98 Top 5 Recap: Two Wins and Three Losses on August 13

Our MoonPicks98 Top 5 card for Thursday, August 13, featured selections across MLB, WNBA and CFL action. The card finished 2–3, with the Dream–Sun Under and B.C. Lions spread delivering our two victories.

The Yankees, Guardians and Payton Tolle strikeout prop finished as losses.

Final Results

  • New York Yankees Moneyline at -135 — Loss

  • Cleveland Guardians Moneyline at -108 — Loss

  • Atlanta Dream vs. Connecticut Sun Under 174.5 at -108 — Win

  • Payton Tolle Over 5.5 Strikeouts at -117 — Loss

  • B.C. Lions +5.5 at -125 — Win

Final record: 2–3

Here is why we liked each play and what we learned from the results.

New York Yankees Moneyline at -135 — Loss

Why We Liked It

The Yankees were our preferred side because Max Fried appeared to give New York a slight starting-pitching advantage over Logan Gilbert.

Seattle also entered the matchup in poor form, having lost six consecutive games and 15 of its previous 20. The Yankees had scored 10 runs against the Mariners in the previous meeting, so we believed New York could produce enough offense at home to support Fried.

At -135, the price remained inside our normal odds limit and did not require us to lay excessive juice.

The Result

The pitching duel arrived, but the Yankees’ offense did not.

New York held Seattle to only one run, but the Mariners won 1–0. Allowing one run will normally give a team an excellent opportunity to win, but the Yankees could not produce any offensive support.

The pitching component of our handicap was solid. The mistake was expecting New York’s recent offensive success to carry into another difficult matchup with Gilbert.

Result: Loss

Cleveland Guardians Moneyline at -108 — Loss

Why We Liked It

Cleveland starter Parker Messick entered the game with a 2.57 ERA and had recorded a 1.77 ERA over his previous six starts. His recent consistency made the Guardians attractive at close to even money.

Detroit starter Keider Montero had been effective for much of the season, but he was coming off an outing in which he allowed five runs. We believed Cleveland had the more dependable starting pitcher and enough value at -108 to justify the wager.

The Result

The Guardians failed to convert the perceived pitching advantage into a victory. This was another reminder that even a favorable starting-pitching matchup does not eliminate the volatility created by offense, defense and bullpen performance.

The price was reasonable, but Cleveland did not deliver the required result.

Result: Loss

Atlanta Dream vs. Connecticut Sun Under 174.5 at -108 — Win

Why We Liked It

This was one of our favorite statistical plays on the card.

Atlanta and Connecticut entered the matchup averaging approximately 169 combined points per game—more than five points below the posted total. Connecticut had gone over 174.5 in only 10 of its first 31 games, and its three most recent home games had averaged only 156 total points.

Atlanta was the stronger team, but it had also been less productive offensively on the road. Our projected game script had the Dream controlling the contest without Connecticut contributing enough points to push the total over 174.5.

The Result

The game remained below the posted total, cashing the Under 174.5.

This result followed our anticipated script: Atlanta did not need the matchup to become a shootout, while Connecticut’s offensive limitations helped keep the combined score under the number.

Result: Win

Payton Tolle Over 5.5 Strikeouts at -117 — Loss

Why We Liked It

Tolle entered the matchup averaging approximately 6.5 strikeouts per appearance, giving us a one-strikeout cushion over the posted number.

His swing-and-miss ability created an appealing ceiling, and we believed he could reach six strikeouts if he worked sufficiently deep into the game. At -117, the prop offered a playable price based on his season-long production.

The Result

Tolle did not reach the six strikeouts required to cash the ticket.

Strikeout props depend on more than a pitcher’s talent. Pitch count, efficiency, opponent contact rate and how deeply the starter works into the game can all determine the result. Tolle’s season average supported the wager, but he did not reach the necessary threshold in this appearance.

Result: Loss

B.C. Lions +5.5 at -125 — Win

Why We Liked It

Calgary was the more likely outright winner, but we believed the spread gave B.C. enough protection in a competitive West Division matchup.

With Nathan Rourke leading the offense, the Lions had the ability to score quickly and remain within one possession. Getting more than five points was important because our analysis suggested a relatively close contest, even if Calgary controlled portions of the game.

We were willing to play B.C. at +5 or +5.5 but would have passed if the number had fallen to +4.

The Result

B.C. stayed within the spread and cashed the +5.5 ticket.

This was a good example of choosing the appropriate market. We did not need the Lions to win outright—we only needed them to remain competitive. Taking the points provided the necessary protection.

Result: Win

What We Learned From the Card

A 2–3 record is not the result we wanted, and we will not attempt to present it as anything else.

The Dream–Sun Under and B.C. spread followed our projected game scripts and produced two solid wins. The Yankees pitching analysis was also largely accurate, but their offense failed completely in a 1–0 loss.

Cleveland could not capitalize on its starting-pitching advantage, while Tolle fell short of the strikeout number despite entering with a season average above the posted line.

The most important lesson is that identifying a statistical edge does not guarantee a winning result. Successful long-term betting requires honest tracking, disciplined pricing and continued review of both winning and losing selections.

At MoonPicks98, we share every outcome. The wins count, the losses count, and transparency always matters.
