Weekend Sports Recap: UFC Upset, CFL Fireworks, MLB Chaos and a Harimoto Family Sweep
The weekend of August 7–9 delivered nearly everything sports bettors could ask for: a major UFC upset, explosive CFL offenses, dramatic MLB finishes and two hometown champions at one of table tennis’s premier events.

Salkilld makes a statement at UFC Vegas 120
Quillan Salkilld entered Saturday’s main event facing the biggest test of his career against established lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot.
He passed that test emphatically.

CFL offenses light up Week 10
The CFL produced plenty of points across the three games played during our Friday-through-Sunday window.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 42–20, improving to 6–2 while Ottawa fell to 0–8. Saskatchewan controlled the game and erupted for 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Montreal delivered the weekend’s biggest offensive performance with a 48–30 victory over Edmonton. The two teams combined for 78 points, giving over bettors another reminder of how quickly CFL totals can explode.
BC then closed the weekend with a much tighter 27–24 win over Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats mounted a late challenge, but the Lions held on for the three-point victory.
The three games averaged approximately 63.7 combined points, with two contests clearing 60.
MLB delivers another unpredictable weekend
Late-inning volatility was one of the biggest MLB storylines.
On Friday, Arizona rookie Ryan Waldschmidt hit a two-run walk-off home run to give the Diamondbacks a 4–3 victory over Los Angeles. The loss extended the Dodgers’ losing streak to seven games.
Los Angeles finally ended the slide Saturday with a 2–1 victory in 10 innings. Arizona had opportunities to win in both the ninth and 10th, but the Dodgers escaped.
Other notable results included:
Boston pitcher Payton Tolle recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 13–1 win over Oakland.
The Yankees defeated Atlanta 3–2 in 10 innings.
Cleveland’s Ángel Martínez drove in six runs against the White Sox.
San Diego beat Houston 7–2 on Sunday.
Detroit shut out Seattle 8–0.
Kansas City defeated Minnesota 8–2.
The Mets routed Pittsburgh 11–1.
Philadelphia edged Toronto 7–6.
The weekend included walk-offs, extra-inning games, blowouts and several disappointing performances from popular betting teams.
Harimoto siblings celebrate in Yokohama
Japanese table tennis fans received a dream finish at WTT Champions Yokohama as Tomokazu and Miwa Harimoto captured the men’s and women’s singles championships.
Tomokazu Harimoto defeated Oh Junsung 4–1 in the men’s final. Before winning the championship, he eliminated top-seeded Sora Matsushima 4–2 in an all-Japanese semifinal.
Miwa Harimoto defeated Chen Xingtong 4–2 in the women’s final. Miwa won the opening two games and built a 3–1 advantage before Chen dominated the fifth game 11–1.
Instead of allowing that result to completely change the match, Miwa regrouped and closed out the championship by winning the sixth game 11–7.
It was an impressive display of composure—and an important reminder that one lopsided game does not always determine the direction of an entire table tennis match.

Be careful chasing UFC hype
Salkilld’s performance was outstanding, but the betting market will react aggressively. He may enter his next fight with the shortest price of his UFC career.
That does not mean he should automatically be faded. It means bettors must evaluate the matchup and determine whether the new price still offers value.
Backing a fighter after a breakout performance can be profitable, but paying for the previous result is rarely a good long-term strategy.
CFL overs remain attractive—but not automatic
Two of the weekend’s three CFL games produced more than 60 combined points. Saskatchewan scored 42, Montreal scored 48 and Edmonton still contributed 30 in a losing effort.
That will naturally attract bettors toward future overs.
However, the most important question is not simply whether the favorite can score. The underdog must usually contribute enough offense to help the game reach the total.
Quarterback form, defensive efficiency, pace and red-zone production should remain central to any CFL totals handicap.
MLB bullpens continue creating volatility
Several weekend games changed after the starting pitchers departed.
That makes first-five-inning markets worth comparing with full-game moneylines. When a team has a clear starting-pitching advantage but an unreliable bullpen, the first-five market can reduce some of the late-inning uncertainty.
Seattle’s 8–0 loss and Pittsburgh’s 11–1 defeat also demonstrated why short-priced MLB favorites should never be treated as guaranteed winners. Even strong teams and favorable matchups can produce surprisingly one-sided results over a 162-game season.
Table tennis totals require more than rankings
Miwa Harimoto’s championship match offered an excellent example of why bettors must evaluate more than the final result.
